In this paper, I dwell on a common inadequate conception of the child that often serves as a foundation for learning and pedagogy in contemporary early childhood education — the conception that I term the heroic child. Drawing on Vygotsky’s work, I plead, instead, for a conception where the child is considered as cognitively and emotionally growing in intimate relations with her social and cultural context.
